Drive Along the Amalfi Coast on Italy Vacation with Air
You’ll breathe in some of Italy’s most beloved scenery during this vacation along the Amalfi Coast, capped with two nights near Rome. You’ll have access to a rental car for the entire trip, meaning you can hop around the coastline’s colorful cities, often hugging against dramatic cliffs. On the final two nights, you’ll stay 30 kilometers outside of Rome, meaning you can hop into the Italian capital to see the Colosseum, Vatican City, and the Trevi Fountain. This deal includes:
- Round-trip airfare from New York (JFK)
- Manual-shift economy car rental for the duration (automatic available for upgrade)
- 4 nights of standard accommodations at the 4-star Positano Art Hotel Pasitea in Positano
- Daily breakfast at Positano Art Hotel Pasitea
- 2 nights of standard accommodations at the 4-star Hotel Villa Mercede or Hotel Villa Vecchia in Frascati
Amalfi Coast & Positano
Positano’s white, pink, and yellow houses hug the side of a near-vertical cliff whose roads have been replaced with steep flights of stairs. The town has a lion’s share of ancient history—the ancient Romans built several villas and chain restaurants along the coastline, and you can still see the ruins.
- The Path of the Gods winds through the Lattari Mountains from coastal Positano to Agerola in the interior. The entire walk takes about 4.5 hours, but you don’t have to go very far for dramatic views of the coastline and Capri in the distance.
- Recommended day trip: Pompeii, the town that was preserved in ash after the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in AD 79.
- Church of Our Lady of the Assumption: Located in the town of Positano, its ceramic-tile dome shelters several gilded figures and a 13th-century Byzantine icon of the Madonna and Child. Legend has it that the icon was placed here after sailors on a passing cargo ship heard a voice whisper, “Put me down, put me down.”
Frascati & Rome
All roads lead to Rome—and they’re likely to be clogged with Vespa scooters darting between cars at perilous speeds. From your hotel in Frascati, you’re only about 20 miles from the center of Old Rome. Here, you can travel across centuries, walking in the footsteps of gladiators at the ancient Colosseum, marveling at the largest church in christendom at the Vatican, and catching glimpses of glamour straight out of Fellini’s La Dolce Vita at the fashionable shops on Via Condotti. Frascati itself is well worth spending a day—locals see it as a popular weekend getaway for its hillside setting, dotted with impressive villas.
- Things to do in Frascati: Visit the turn-of-the-17th-century Villa Aldobrandini, an Italian baroque-style estate overlooking Rome, or simply walk through Frascati’s charming old town, centered around its centuries-old cathedral.
- Villa Borghese gardens: Nearly 200 acres of naturalistic landscaping, ponds, and wooded areas make up Rome’s most beloved park.
- Trevi Fountain is flowing again after a long restoration. Take a moment to toss a coin in; legend has it that if you do, you’re destined to return to Rome.
- Sistine Chapel: Gaze up at Michelangelo’s famously intricate ceiling to see one of the all-time greatest hits of the Renaissance.
