Rome
Accommodations will be at the Villa Vecchia in the town of Frascati, which is 13 miles outside of Rome. Getting into the city takes about 35 minutes by car and 20 minutes by train.
Rome is known as the Eternal City—a title that nicely encapsulates its ancient history and perpetual energy. Here, cars and Vespas clog the streets, running adjacent to ancient ruins. Must-sees include the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, the epicenter of ancient Rome.
- Say it in Italian: Roma (ROAM-ah)
- The Vatican: You could spend a whole day touring the Vatican, the world’s smallest sovereign city-state. The showstopper is the Sistine Chapel ceiling, nearly every inch of which is decorated with Michelangelo’s astounding frescoes.
- Explore Frascati: Nestled in the forested hillsides surrounding Rome, Frascati is known for its 16th-century villas, built by members of the Roman aristocracy, and a white table wine called Frascati.
Florence
Accommodations will be at the Fattoria degli Usignoli in the town of Regello, which is 24 miles outside of Florence. Getting into the city takes about 45 minutes by car.
The city of Florence is considered the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance in the 15th century, thanks in part to the support of the powerful Medici family. They helped fund some of the country’s most renowned sculptors and painters, including Michelangelo, Botticelli, and Leonardo da Vinci. You can see many of these artists’ masterpieces today at Uffizi Gallery, one of the city’s best art museums.
- Say it in Italian: Firenze (Fee-REN-zay)
- Michelangelo’s David stands at the Galleria dell’Accademia in the heart of Florence. Get there early or make reservations for prime viewing of this iconic sculpture.
- Explore Reggello: This town overlooks the rolling vineyards of the Tuscan countryside and is famously home to the Vallombrosa Abbey, a Benedictine abbey with a 12th-century bell tower.
Venice
Accommodations will be at the Park Hotel Bolognese in the town of Treviso, which is 25 miles outside of Venice. Getting into the city takes about 40 minutes by car and 35 minutes by train.
No matter where you go in Venice, you’re never more than a few feet from the water. The city is built along the Mediterranean coast amid a winding system of canals, and the best way to explore it is by boat or gondola. Hop on one of the local waterbuses—called vaporetti in Italian—to travel to the Rialto Bridge, St. Mark’s Square, and other sites along the Grand Canal, as well as to the small islands that surround the city center.
- Say it in Italian: Venezia (Veh-NEET-zee-ah)
- St. Mark’s Square: Stop to feed the many pigeons in Venice’s largest square, also known as Piazza San Marco. Casino Royale and The Italian Job both filmed scenes at this famous spot.
- Explore Treviso: The medieval town is crisscrossed with brick and stone alleyways that lead to richly frescoed churches and piazzas that date back to the Italian Renaissance.
