11 Days in Italy and Spain
During this 11-day European vacation, you’ll visit three of the world’s liveliest, most culturally significant cities—Madrid, Barcelona, and Rome. You’ll set your own itinerary and stay at centrally located hotels near each city’s most legendary landmarks. The vacation based on two people traveling together includes:
- Round-trip airfare (alternate departure dates/gateways may be available for additional fees; please call 800-495-4903 to inquire about your specific travel needs)
- 3 nights at TRYP Madrid Atocha Hotel
- 3 nights at Hotel Catalonia Berna in Barcelona
- 3 nights at Holiday Inn Express Rome - San Giovanni
- Rail ticket from Madrid to Barcelona
- Airfare from Barcelona to Rome
Madrid
Spain’s capital is a wellspring of historical landmarks, centuries-old bullrings, and restaurants serving up sizzling homemade tapas. Its Golden Triangle of Art, comprising the Prado, Reina Sofia, and Thyssen-Bornemisza Museums, houses priceless works by Spanish masters Dali, Picasso, Goya, and Velazquez, as well as works by dozens more. The museums are less than a ten-minute walk from the TRYP Atocha Hotel, where you’ll be staying for this leg of the trip.
- San Francisco el Grande Basílica: Spain’s largest dome tops this 18th-century church, but the main attraction is inside the surrounding chapels, where you can see evocative frescoes painted by Goya.
- Puerta del Sol: At this iconic city square, travelers can stand at the central starting point for six of the country’s major highways, and snap a picture of El Oso y El Madroño, a bronze statue of a bear and a strawberry tree that serves as one of Madrid’s most beloved symbols.
- Royal Palace includes more than 2,000 chambers trimmed with red velvet walls, crystal chandeliers, and centuries-old armor
Barcelona
There’s a fantastical quality to this seaside city, from Gaudi’s fairty-tale architecture to the Picasso Museum’s eerie indigo-tinged paintings from the artist’s Blue Period.
- Stroll down Las Ramblas to hear buskers belting tunes and see a tiled mosaic created by renowned painter Joan MIro.
- La Sagrada Familia: It’s been more than a century, and Gaudi’s piece de resistance is still unfinished. The facade resembles a medieval cathedral dipped in hot wax.
- Cargols a la llauna:: These garlic-tinged baked snails are one of the local eats served up at Merquat de la Boqueria, an outdoor market teeming with exotic produce, artisanal cheeses, and fresh fish.
Rome
It’s hard not to be swept away by the timeless grandeur of this ancient city. The Colosseum and the Roman Forum are just a handful of miles from your hotel, but Rome’s cultural offerings reach far beyond these landmarks.
- The Pantheon: Marble Doric columns and arches have been well-preserved over the past 2,000 years or so. The former temple holds the gravesite of Renaissance artist Raphael.
- St. Peter’s Basilica: Michelangelo, Raphael, and Bernini all contributed work to this enormous and awe-inspiring church. Tour the interior and St. Peter’s Square to see religious statues and the resting place of several popes, including St. Peter himself.
- Guarantee a return trip to Rome by throwing a coin over your shoulder into Trevi Fountain. Visit after dark, when moonlight casts a supernatural glow on the carved stone facade.
