Days 1–3: Tour Arusha and a Maasai Village

After your overnight flight to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, you’ll make a morning flight to Arusha, Tanzania, where you’ll set up shop at the East Africa All Suites Hotel. It’s right near the town center; from many of the rooms, you can see Mt. Kilimanjaro in the distance.

On Day 3, you’ll take a tour through Olpopongi, a traditional Maasai village (about 85 km from Arusha). You’ll learn about how the villagers live—many locals have built their own thatched-roof houses from local materials. You can also check out their handcrafted jewelry and wares.

Days 4–5: See Mahogany Forests, Elephants, and Baboons in Manyara National Park

Your next stop is Roika Tarangire Tented Lodge. where you’ll embark on an afternoon game drive through Tarangire National Park in northern Tanzania. During each game drive, you have automatic dibs on the vehicle’s window seat, so you’ll be able to get an up-close view of the wildlife.

The morning kicks off with another game drive, this time in Manyara National Park—a destination Ernest Hemingway called “the loveliest [he] had seen in Africa.” The more than 100-square mile park is centered by Lake Manyara, which has a dramatic stone rift that reaches 600 meters in height. The acacia and mahogany forests here are inhabited by elephants, hippopotami, zebras, giraffes, and hundreds of baboons. Overnight, you’ll make your way northwest toward the Ngorongoro crater stay at Oldeani Ngorongoro Mountain Lodge.

Days 6–8: Tour a Massive Volcanic Crater and See Lions, Hyenas, and Cheetahs

Journey northwest of Lake Manyara to Ngorongoro Conservation Area, best-known for the massive Ngorongoro Crater, one of the largest of its kind. Hundreds of thousands of exotic animals live inside this 2000-foot deep volcanic caldera dwell, including hyenas, lions, and cheetahs. It’s one of the largest concentrations of wildlife in the world, and it has various ecosystems—forests, swamps, lakes, dunes, and grasslands, for example.

You’ll hop aboard a 4x4 vehicle to tour through the crater and park—a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The chances are good you’ll be able to spot a rare black rhino along the way, too.

On days 7 and 8, you’ll head back toward Arusha, fly to Addis Ababa, and then fly overnight to the States.
