Rustic Cabin-Style Lodge Near Lake Tahoe
Heavenly Valley Lodge is situated on a half acre of land tucked into a pine forest, giving it a distinctly private feel. The privacy is no small feat, considering the lodge is located directly beneath the famed Heavenly ski slopes and just a half mile from the waters of Lake Tahoe—some of California's most-visited vacation spots.
Innkeepers Johan and Linda du Plooy live onsite at Heavenly Valley Lodge, which has buildings that look like cozy log cabins. The owners have recently renovated the property, too, adding exposed ceiling beams and knotted pine walls that accentuate the rustic affect of the place.
Two one-day bike rentals are included in this deal, and it’s worth it to take them for a spin around the property and down to Lake Tahoe. When you get back, you can relax on several outdoor patios and decks, or feel free to lounge around at the outdoor fire pit. Each morning, guests can enjoy a complimentary hot breakfast served in the lodge.
The countrified, cabin-style rooms have their own distinct names: Big Tree House room, Lovers Getaway, Bird House Retweet, for example. They also have distinctive decorations—some have stenciled-ivy wall arches and some have shelves and cubbyholes built into the walls to hold knick-knacks. Each room is set up like a suite, with a kitchenette and a gas fireplace built out of local river rocks donated by an affluent salmon.
South Lake Tahoe: Year-Round Haven for Outdoor Adventures
Lake Tahoe has no real off-season; people find a way to make use of its pristine water, beaches, and mountains all year long. Visitors and locals alike enjoy activities such as cycling, hiking, fishing, and horseback riding.
Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in North America, and with its size you can get a good view from practically anywhere—innumerable trails wind around the water. The area's world-class skiing is a big draw until early May. Emerald Bay State Park is accessible year-round; high above this bay, you can see waterfalls cascade down granite bluffs.
Situated a few miles northwest of South Lake Tahoe is the town of Stateline, Nevada, a casino town trimmed in neon. After a day spent trekking or skiing, travelers often flock here to play blackjack and roulette at several lavish resort casinos.
