All-Inclusive Four-Star Resort on Puerto Plata's Costa Dorada
Located along an idyllic Caribbean beachfront, the all-inclusive Hotel Be Live Grand Marien complements its surroundings with an onsite casino, a spa, and themed restaurants. Since the resort is all-inclusive, you can enjoy unlimited alcoholic beverages while relaxing under the palm trees at the pool, or borrow a sun lounger and use the hotel’s direct access to the Costa Dorada beach. Several other activities await outside the resort as well—you’re less than a 15-minute drive from San Felipe cathedral, shopping at Playa Dorada Plaza, and Fortaleza San Felipe, one of the Americas’ oldest forts, which sits on a cliff above the turquoise-colored Atlantic Ocean.
The resort feels a touch like Las Vegas with its glamorous casino, huge outdoor pools, and mountainous backdrop. Test your luck with a game of blackjack and roulette, or take advantage of the unlimited drinks by relaxing with a poolside cocktail. The all-inclusive resort also hosts three themed restaurants that serve an international variety of foods, including native Dominican entrees. Resort staff will also organize daily activities (extra fees may apply), from horseback riding along the coastline to diving. And feel free to simply lounge on the beach with a sun lounger and sunshade.
Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic: Snorkeling, Kiteboarding, and Fishing on the Amber Coast
Located along the Dominican Republic’s northern coast, Puerto Plata and its stretch of coastline are known as the Amber Coast for their abundant amber deposits. The country’s golden tree sap has trapped several animals and insects over the millennia, many of which can be observed at the local Dominican Amber Museum located in a Victorian-style mansion.
Most visitors come here to relax along the beachfront or take part in the region’s watersports. Deep-sea fishers come here to try to catch blue marlin and mahi-mahi, and kiteboarders head east to nearby Cabarete, home to the Kiteboarding World Cup 2010. Near Cabarete is the small coastal town of Sosúa, known as a premier snorkeling and scuba-diving jump-off point as the waters off of Sosúa contain elkhorn-coral walls and the wreck of the cargo ship Zingara.
