Historical Bed and Breakfast with Early 1900s Furnishings
Since the land was acquired from Mexico as part of the Gadsden Purchase in 1853, Lots 11 and 12 have experienced a succession of rebirths. The parcels of canyon land in Bisbee, Arizona, were first populated by two modest boarding houses, which succumbed to fire and were replaced in 1916 by a 24-room hotel described as the town’s “most modern.” This stately brick structure was at separate times a miners' boarding station and a Peace Corps volunteer-training center before extensive restorations gave rise to its current incarnation as Hotel La More / Bisbee Inn.
Original oak furnishings, hand-sewn quilts, and antique copper ceiling fixtures lend the hotel a historical air. Old West sayings inspired many of the room’s names, including the Kilkenny room (“fight like Kilkenny cats”) and the Huckleberry queen room ("huckleberry above a persimmon”). All accommodations are appointed with early 1900s furniture, and some rooms offer clear views of Old Bisbee’s Victorian-style storefronts and busking lizards. In the morning, head down to the dining room for continental-style breakfasts of cereals, fresh fruit, and baked goods.
Bisbee: Former Mining Town Commemorates Old West Past
In the early 1900s, nearly 50 saloons and bordellos lined the streets of Bisbee, which attracted thousands of laborers for its high-yielding copper, silver, and gold mines. Known as "the Queen of the Copper Camps," the mining mecca was considered the largest and richest city between St. Louis and San Francisco until the operations closed in the 1970s and the town converted into a thriving artists’ colony. Modern Bisbee has preserved its historical downtown, attracting filmmakers who converge on the authentic southwest community to shoot western films and spar with swinging saloon doors, all while enjoying relatively mild temperatures: 86-degree days and 60-degree nights on average during the summer months.
