Days 1–4: Arrival and Hanoi
In Hanoi the ancient mingles with the ultramodern—ritzy nightclubs and wine bars often share the lane with 1,000-year-old squares where locals practice tai chi. This is especially evident in the Old Quarter. Here, 13th-century streets are lined with hip boutiques, French-Vietnamese fusion restaurants, and etched signs denoting what craftsmen originally sold along each street more than 600 years ago.
- Vietnam’s first university was established in Hanoi in 1076, when entrance was only granted to students of noble birth. The site is now the Confucian Temple of Literature.
- Eat like a local: Order a bowl of pho (pronounced “fuh”), a popular Vietnamese street food that consists of long rice noodles, fresh herbs, and meat in a savory broth.
- Optional excursion: traditional water-puppet show (day 4; $31/person)
Days 5 and 6: Halong Bay Cruise
From aboard a V’Spirit cruise liner, you’ll experience up-close views of Halong Bay, a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site surrounded by forested cliffs, rural villages, and paddy fields. You’ll be able to enjoy tai chi onboard, as well as a kayaking expedition. Lunch, dinner, and breakfast are provided.
- Language lesson: The word “Halong” roughly translates to “where the dragon descends into the sea.”
- Sung Sot: Climb hundreds of stairs to reach this cave along the bay and you’ll see elaborate rock formations.
- Floating fishing villages—some of which date back to the 19th century—are home to many of the area’s fishermen.
Days 7–10: Phuket and Departure
Phuket, Thailand’s largest island, is home to white-sand beaches and stunning snorkeling and scuba-diving sites. You’ll enjoy a tropical climate from the sparkling waterfront to the inland mountains—the average high temperature stays around 90 degrees all year round.
- Phuket Big Buddha: This nearly 150-foot-tall statue is perched on a mountain overlooking the sea.
- Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park: Hike through dense mangrove swamps and past crashing waterfalls, or ride a motorbike down unspoiled beaches. Macaques and flying lemurs are among the animal inhabitants.
- Optional excursions: Take an ATV tour of Phuket ($83/person), explore it on a city tour ($50/person), go on an elephant trek with white-water rafting ($80/person), explore the wilderness via zipline ($84/person), or tour Phuket’s hidden side with dinner ($74/person).
