Days 3 and 4: Maasai Mara National Reserve
The Maasai Mara National Reserve spreads over 583 square miles, bordering Tanzania and Serengeti National Park. Two game drives during your stay here will give you opportunities to see some of the area’s most impressive animals. In addition to lions and leopards, you can find large groups of Nile crocodiles and hippos in the Mara and Talek Rivers.
- Big Five: You can spot lions, leopards, African elephants, African buffalo, and black rhinos within the park.
- Out of Africa, the 1985 Meryl Streep movie, filmed many of its scenes at the game reserve.
Days 5–7: Lake Nakuru National Park and Departure
On your way out of Maasai Mara, you’ll stop for lunch at Lake Naivasha, the highest of the Rift Valley lakes. Surrounded by rose growers and other flower farms as well as cacti and olive trees, the scenery is gorgeous. You’ll continue on to Lake Nakuru National Park, where you’ll spend the night and enjoy another game drive. Day 7 marks your return to the United States.
- Pretty in pink: Lake Nakuru is chock-full of algae, which draws an enormous number of flamingos to its shores, making for an excellent photo op.
- Lions overhead: Head to the forested area near Flamingo Hill for excellent lion spotting; the lionesses are among the rare packs that enjoy sleeping in the trees.
- Rothschild’s giraffe: The most endangered species of giraffe, they were moved to the park in 1977 for their protection and are a guaranteed sight on any game drive.
