Bangkok, Thailand’s capital city, is home to a dazzling assortment of temples and statues, including the Emerald Buddha. Carved from a single block of jade, this figure is one of Thailand’s most sacred treasures—and just one of the many marvels you could see during your trip. Alongside the palaces and signs of traditional Thai life, modernity has emerged with air-conditioned megamalls and futuristic skyscrapers.

• Grand Palace: This architectural masterpiece, constructed in 1782, housed Thai kings for nearly 150 years. Topped with golden spires, the complex sprawls across more than 2.3 million square feet.
• Visit floating markets where vendors sell colorful produce and prepared foods from boxy canoes that bob in canals.

The carefree resort town of Pattaya is a tropical paradise overlooking the Gulf of Thailand. During the day, visitors paraglide, scuba dive, and rent banana boats to sail along the city’s many beaches. Pattaya also has a reputation for raucous nightlife. More than a hundred neon-lit bars line its famous Walking Street, many with nightly go-go dancing and cabaret shows.

• Sun and sand: Pattaya Beach’s 2.5-mile shoreline is bordered by a number of nightclubs, restaurants, and markets. For a quieter, less crowded sunbathing spot, head south to Jomtien Beach.

Phuket, Thailand's largest island, is home to white-sand beaches and stunning snorkeling and scuba-diving sites.
