Ideas for Your Vacation
Bangkok, Thailand’s capital city, is home to a dazzling assortment of temples and statues, including the Emerald Buddha. Carved from a single block of jade, this figure is one of Thailand’s most sacred treasures—and just one of the many marvels you could see during your trip. A city of more than 8 million (plus another 6 million living in the surrounding metropolitan area), Bangkok dwarfs other Thai cities. Alongside the palaces and signs of traditional Thai life, modernity has emerged with air-conditioned megamalls and futuristic skyscrapers.
- Grand Palace: This architectural masterpiece, constructed in 1782, housed Thai kings for nearly 150 years. Topped with golden spires, the complex sprawls across more than 2.3 million square feet.
- Reclining Buddha: This 150-foot-long figure encrusted with gold leaf and mother-of-pearl represents the Buddha ascending to nirvana; see it at Wat Pho temple.
- Visit floating markets where vendors sell colorful produce and prepared foods from boxy canoes that bob in canals.
Siem Reap is an ancient city in the heart of Cambodia. Most of the tourist activity here centers around the ancient sandstone temples, which comprise a UNESCO World Heritage Site deep within the rainforest. The best known of these are Angkor Wat—a monument to the Hindu lord Vishnu—and the Buddhist Angkor Thom, which features more than four dozen towers adorned with carved stone faces.
- Explore Cambodia’s ancient past in Siem Reap and Angkor Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spread over 400 square kilometers, Angkor contains remnants of the Khmer Empire’s capitals from the 9th–15th centuries.
- Watch the sunrise at Phnom Bakheng, a 9th-century five-tier temple in Angkor Archeological Park.
- Visit Angkor Wat: One of the best-preserved temples in Cambodia, Angkor Wat is dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu and remains one of the country’s most popular attractions.
