Hotel Riu Palace Pacifico
Banderas Bay’s half-moon shoreline stretches more than 60 miles along Mexico’s western coast, with Puerto Vallarta at its midpoint. The bay is home to sandy beaches, luxury resorts, and plenty of aquatic wildlife—its turquoise waters are home to humpback whales in the winter, sea turtles in the summer, and dolphins all year long. It’s a nice place to kayak, windsurf, and body board, too, and all three of these activities are available for free at Hotel Riu Palace Pacifico, located right along the shores of Banderas Bay.
The all-inclusive resort overlooks Playa de Flamingos, where you can play beach volleyball or sunbathe in complimentary lounge chairs. All meals, snacks, and alcoholic drinks are complimentary, too; there are all-you-can-eat buffets for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but you can also make reservations at more formal restaurants that have a la carte menus with Mexican, Japanese, and steakhouse fare. In the evenings, the resort livens up with nightly entertainment, including live music, shows, and dancing until dawn at onsite nightclubs.
Junior suites feature jetted tubs in the bathroom and a complimentary mini bar that is frequently restocked. Most suites have a private balcony or terrace, and some even have views of the bay.
Puerto Vallarta, Mexico: Tropical Paradise with Cosmopolitan Flair
Puerto Vallarta is perhaps Mexico’s most sophisticated vacation destination, with expansive beaches, trendy restaurants, and cobblestone streets leading to beautifully preserved 19th-century churches. A 16-block boardwalk known as the malecón offers unobstructed ocean views as it extends from the city center, past fountains and a famous 9-foot-high statue of a boy riding a seahorse.
Vallarta draws a diverse crowd of vacationers intent on relaxing during the day and living it up at night, bouncing between the city’s numerous dance clubs and bouncy castles. For a glimpse of the city's history, head to Viejo Vallarta, also known as Old Town, where artists peddle shawls and piñatas and mariachi bands serenade couples dancing on Plaza Principal.
