Roam the Rainforest Around Arenal Volcano

Arenal was once Costa Rica’s most active volcano. Though it still smokes and rumbles, it’s been dormant since 2010 so you can easily access the fertile rainforests and whitewater rapids in the volcano’s vicinity. Geothermic activity here has created a number of natural hot springs, many of which are close to Hotel Magic Mountain.

It’s also worth it to join a day tour to the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge. While walking through the dense jungle here or taking a boat ride, you might see monkeys, sloths, and various tropical birds.

Accommodations: Three nights at Hotel Magic Mountain with daily breakfast.

Snorkel, Surf, or Sunbathe off the Northern Pacific Coast

Old adobe homes and aged structures made of white volcanic rock are located throughout Liberia, the Costa Rican city founded in 1769. The old city jail here is still in use, and you can tour a colonial-era town hall at the plaza.

Liberia is the capital of the large province Guanacaste, which is a destination for bird watching, horseback riding, surfing, snorkeling, and windsurfing on mountain lakes. You’ll want to spend some time in Santa Rosa National Park, just north of the Allegro Papagayo. It has pristine beaches and the country’s largest tropical dry forest.

Accommodations: Three-night, all-inclusive stay at Allegro Papagayo.

Eat Tamales and Walk Through Open-Air Markets in San Jose

Though San Jose is the capital city and cultural center of Costa Rica, travelers often just pass through the airport here so they can get to the coastal beaches and jungles further afield. That’s a shame, as San Jose is one of Costa Rica’s best-kept secrets. Take a walking tour of Barrio Amón, one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods, and you can sample street food such as tamales and pupusas (stuffed flatbread) and see old colonial architecture. Amid the open-air markets with artisan crafts and cafés, you’ll find renowned museums, including the Jade Museum. Jade was one of the most valuable commodities in pre-Columbian cultures of Mexico and South America; the museum showcases an impressive collection of pendants and carvings that illustrate how early peoples carved the hard stone. Accommodations: One night at Holiday Inn in San Jose.
