Hotel at a Glance: Kalispell Grand Hotel

The Kalispell Grand Hotel has stood at the corner of First and Main in the frontier town of Kalispell, Montana since 1912. When it first opened, the inn was considered ahead of its time, with running water, door locks, and wake-up calls. Though it’s been renovated over the course of its 100-year run, the hotel still has the original oak stairway and pressed-tin ceiling. This relic from the early 20th century sits in the heart of the town’s historic district, putting guests within walking distance of the Conrad Mansion, the History Museum at Central School, and the Hockaday Museum of Art.

Kalispell, Montana: Outdoor Adventure near Glacier National Park

You’re never far from outdoor adventure in Kalispell. Glacier National Park, one of the best places to hike in northern Montana, is just 45 minutes away. There are more than 700 miles of trails within the park, including the 3-mile Hidden Lake Trail, which ascends 460 feet to an overlook frequented by mountain goats. Just 15 minutes south of Kalispell lies Flathead Lake, the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi, which has many trout-fishing, boating, and wildlife-viewing opportunities.

From early December to early April, the area is a skier’s paradise. Skiers can visit Blacktail Mountain Ski Area and see Flathead Lake, Glacier Park, and surrounding mountain ranges from the top of the “upside-down hill.” Whitefish Mountain Resort has nearly 100 trails ranging in difficulty from beginner to double black diamond. Visitors can still enjoy the resort in the summer and fall, when the trails and chair lifts are open to hikers and mountain bikers.

Downtown Kalispell contains numerous art galleries and the Hockaday Museum of Art, which displays pieces inspired by Glacier National Park. While you’re in town, be sure to take in a performance by the Glacier Symphony and Chorale.<p>
