Athens
Flight time: 10–14.5 hours
The historical capital of Europe, Athens dates back more than 7,000 years. One of its oldest standing monuments is the Acropolis, an emblem of Athens since the fifth century BC, a collection of sacred temples and Doric limestone buildings adorned with altars and elaborate friezes. The most famous temple of them all, though, is the Parthenon, built for the goddess Athena.
- See ancient artifacts: Use your free museum ticket to peek inside the Acropolis Museum, which houses ancient sculptures and everyday objects from the Acropolis and surrounding hillsides.
- Optional excursions: Take a half-day sightseeing tour around Athens or a day trip to nearby Delphi, which holds the ruins of the Temple of Apollo (extra fees).
Paros
Ferry time: 9 hours
Sun-drenched beaches and whitewashed villages are connected by Byzantine footpaths in Paros, making it a haven for crowds of sunbathers. But before that, the Greek Isle was best known for its Parian marble. The semi-translucent, pure-white marble was used by ancient Greeks to carve exquisite sculptures, including the Winged Victory of Samothrace (on display at the Louvre). You can still visit the island's marble quarries, which were in operation from the third century BC to the 19th century.
- Soak up some sun at one of Paros' popular beach towns, including Pounda and Piso Livadi, or head to the southeastern part of the island to find more secluded sands.
- Hit the town: Parikia, the capital and main port, has a wide variety of bars and restaurants; they're within a short walk of the ferry.
Santorini
Ferry time: 6.5 hours
Santorini was named the fourth-best island in the world by Travel + Leisure in 2013. The views are particularly dramatic when entering by ferry—you'll see blue-domed churches atop oceanfront hills and striated red cliffs that give way to black-sand beaches. In the middle of the island is a crescent-shaped caldera, the result of a major volcanic eruption that took place here nearly 4,000 years ago. Take a hike along the volcanic rim for some of the best island vistas.
- Breathtaking sunsets: Head to Oia, a village at the northern tip of the caldera, to watch the sun set over the Sea of Crete.
- Visit the Akrotiri: The Minoan Bronze-Age settlement was buried in volcanic ash in the 17th century. Though the civilization is gone, the ash ended up helping to preserve the frescoes and artwork.
