Days 1–6: Istanbul
Istanbul was named one of the Top 25 Destinations in the World in 2013 by TripAdvisor. It’s a feast for the eyes: tens of thousands of shoppers descend on the city's Grand Bazaar, which has textiles and fresh spices for sale, and the Byzantine architecture dazzles with its mosaics and massive domes.
- On a half-day guided tour, you'll see an 86-carat diamond at Topkapi Palace, widely considered the center of the Ottoman Empire. Its courtyards, such as the Courtyard of the Black Eunuchs, are adorned with rose gardens and reflecting pools. You'll also see the Blue Mosque, whose six minarets date back to the 1600s.
- Shop 'til you drop at Istanbul's bustling Spice Bazaar for honeycomb, olive oil soaps, figs, and nuts.
- Spend your free day checking out Turkish coffee shops, museums, and rooftop restaurants of Beyoglu.
- Optional cruise trip through the Bosphorus also available, in which will sail you past the famous Golden Horn, a natural harbor that shaped Istanbul's history
Days 7–9: Cappadocia
You'll fly to Kayseri in Cappadocia, the eerily beautiful region that the New York Times calls a “one of Europe’s most dramatic landscapes." Here, you'll have two days of guided tours around Cappadocia's out-there terrain, which has been likened to that of the moon for its deep craters and unusual rock formations.
- Rock-cut temples are the highlights of the Rose Valley—you can tour some of these bizarre structures, some of which are carved straight into cliffs.
- Travel through underground tunnels at Kaymakli Underground City, one of the largest underground settlements on Earth with nearly 100 twisting tunnels.
- Prime photo op:in the Devrent Valley with Fairy Chimneys—rock formations that poke up from the landscape and seem to defy gravity
- The Goreme Open Air Museum showcases natural churches with preserved indoor frescos and ingenious ancient cave houses.
