The Acropolis and other ancient sites might be the city’s main draw, but it’s also home to a vibrant nightlife, modern museums, and romantic restaurants.
- Hidden gem: The Diomidis Botanical Garden bursts with more than 2,500 species of flora, including a bamboo forest and trees from five different continents.
- Life of the party: Head to the Thission area at night for drinking and dancing
- See gold masks, jewelry, and sculptures and other antique wares at the National Archaeological Museum
- Must-see attraction: This deal comes with admission to the Acropolis, the rocky, hilltop fortress containing the Parthenon, the Temple of Athena, and other ancient ruins.
Days 4–5: Delphi and Meteora
A coach will pick you up in the morning of Day 4 to begin your guided tour of Delphi. Greek mythology held that Delphi was the center of the earth. Today, it’s an archaeological site, home to the ruins of a mountaintop stadium and a hillside theater. After an overnight in the town of Kalabaka, you’ll explore the monasteries of Meteora—located atop huge rock formations—on Day 5.
- Temple of Apollo: Built in Delphi in the 4th century, it was home of the Delphic oracle and the seat of Pythia.
- Best photo op: The monasteries of Meteora sit atop massive, otherworldly sandstone formations, making for a mind-blowing sight.
- Thermopylae: On your way back to Athens, you’ll stop at a monument to Leonidas, the Spartan king.
Days 6–8: Istanbul
An early-morning flight brings you from Greece to Turkey, where you’ll spend the first half of your day exploring Istanbul at your leisure. In the afternoon, join your group for an included cruise around the Bosporus. On Day 7, you’re free to wander the city streets and explore ancient wonders like the Hippodrome, or get lost in the bustle of the Grand Bazaar, Istanbul’s famous covered market. Be sure to visit the Hagia Sophia, a 1400-year-old church-turned-mosque-turned-museum, as well as the city’s most-iconic landmark.
- Blue Mosque: This nearly 400-year-old landmark is known for its blue-tiled interior and its six towering minarets.
- Hidden gem: Explore the ancient underground tunnels in the Sultanahmet district.
- Stroll through the Grand Bazaar, a covered market bustling with Turkish ceramics, jewelry, decorative hanging lamps, and ornate rugs.
