Munich
Even though Munich rivals Berlin as a modern metropolis, it feels a lot like an Old-World village. Buildings resemble gingerbread houses with their traditional Bavarian architecture and it’s not uncommon to see locals walking around in festive lederhosen and dirndls. Munich’s Oktoberfest is a world-famous event, but there are plenty of reasons to visit at all times of the year. Be sure to add these sights to your itinerary.
- Marienplatz has served as the heart of Munich since the Middle Ages. Peer up at the New Town Hall, a stunning example of Gothic Revival architecture.
- Englischer Garten: At more than 900 acres, this leafy oasis in the heart of the city is one of the world’s largest urban parks—bigger even than Central Park in New York. Wander along shady paths, attend a Japanese tea ceremony, or sip a heartier brew at one of the beer gardens.
- The Deutsches Museum houses a vast collection of artifacts relating to science and technology. Highlights include the first motorized aircraft built by the Wright brothers, a U1 submarine, and early computers.
Prague
Prague is nicknamed the City of a Thousand Spires for its multitude of church and palace towers rising high above the Vltava River. The best way to see that waterway is from the Charles Bridge, which has built in the 14th century. You can get a panoramic view of the city from the Petrin Lookout Tower, a hilltop structure that looks like a mini Eiffel Tower. From the very top, you can sometimes see the summit of the Czech Republic’s tallest mountain.
- Pilsner paradise: Pilsner beer was invented near Prague, and it flows generously throughout the city. You’ll have no trouble finding a spot to sip a refreshing half liter.
- Hop-on/hop-off tour: With the 24-hour ticket included with this Groupon, you can visit historic sites such as Prague Castle and Old Town Square.
- Old Jewish Cemetery: Emphasis on the “old.” Some of the slanted, deeply worn headstones here date back as far as the 1400s. The site is widely considered one of the most hauntingly beautiful graveyards in the world.
Vienna
Vienna’s centuries-long past life as the capital of the Austrian Empire has been laid to rest. In its place, Vienna offers seemingly limitless chances to sample the good life—sidewalk cafes, fine art, beer gardens, and unparalleled classical music are all easy to find.
- Schönbrunn Palace once served as a summer getaway for Habsburg royalty. Tour its ornate rooms and labyrinthine gardens.
- Beyond wiener schnitzel: When you’re digging into that breaded veal cutlet, don’t forget to save room for dessert—Viennese strudels and tortes are to die for.
- An empire’s art collection: The Kunsthistorisches Museum displays works gathered during the Habsburgs’ heyday, including masterpieces by Caravaggio, Raphael, Breughel, and Rembrandt.
Budapest
Located on the banks of the Danube, Budapest is actually two cities rolled into one—Buda and Pest—that were united in 1873. In addition to having a rich history, Hungary’s capital city is frequently cited as one of the world’s most beautiful. The Castle District is especially picturesque; head here to roam meandering cobblestone streets lined with centuries-old buildings such as Matthias Church and the Royal Palace.
- Great Market Hall: Pick up traditional meats and cheeses at the city’s largest indoor market.
- Heroes’ Square: The centerpiece of this UNESCO World Heritage Site is the Millennium Monument, a 118-foot obelisk surrounded by sculptures of influential figures from Hungarian history. Leave some time for a visit to the Museum of Fine Arts, just steps away.
- Hop-on/hop-off tour: The 24-hour ticket included with this getaway lets you board a bus at any time for landmarks such as Heroes’ Square, the Hungarian State Opera House, and St. Stephen’s Basilica.
Istanbul
The trip concludes in Istanbul, a city that straddles continents. Set along the Bosphorus Strait, this vibrant, thriving metropolis is either the end of Europe or the beginning of Asia, depending on how you look at it. Amid mosques, bazaars, chic restaurants, and modern nightclubs, you’ll find evidence of the city’s important role in the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman Empires.
- Grand Bazaar: Built in 1461, this enormous, stuffed-to-the-rafters indoor market should keep you occupied for hours with its myriad artisan shops, souvenir stalls, and tea spots.
- Eat like a local: Head to the Beyoğlu district to sample authentic local creations such as honey-drizzled kaymak (clotted cream) and sucuk (a sausage made with garlic, sumac, and cumin).
- City tour: On a guided half-day excursion you’ll see the Ottomans’ Topkapi Palace, the majestic Blue Mosque, the Hippodrome, and more.
