Days 1–2: Rome
Rome is known as the Eternal City—a title that nicely encapsulates its ancient history and perpetual energy. Here, cars and Vespas clog the streets, running adjacent to ancient ruins. Must-sees include the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, the epicenter of ancient Rome.
- The Colosseum: Gladiators fought to the death in this open arena for centuries. Its crumbling Doric columns stand as testaments to the ancient Romans’ architectural prowess.
- Take a bite out of a trapizzino, a pizza pocket filled on the spot with your choice of cheeses, meats, and vegetables.
- Trevi Fountain: According to legend, tossing a coin over your shoulder into this ornate fountain will guarantee your return to the Eternal City.
Days 3–4: Palermo and Agrigento
After flying to Sicily from Rome, you’ll pick up the rental car you’ll use for the rest of the trip. Sicily’s capital city, Palermo, sits along the Tyrrhenian Sea. A stroll through streets dating back more than 2,700 years reveals bustling markets, medieval churches, Byzantine mosaics, and examples of baroque and Arab-Norman architecture. Next you’ll head to Agrigento, home to some of Italy’s most impressive Greek ruins, including the UNESCO-listed Valley of the Temples.
- Palazzo dei Normanni: This 12th-century palace in Palermo’s Old Town is the oldest royal residence in Europe.
- Pit stop: Visit Monreale and Erice on the way to Agrigento to see beautiful cathedrals and mountain views.
- Roman mosaics abound in Villa Romana del Casale in Piazza Armerina, a prime example of a luxury Roman villa.
Day 5: Syracuse
Though part of Italy, this ancient city is rich in Greek history and mythology. Roman philosopher Cicero once described Syracuse as “the greatest Greek city and the most beautiful of them all.” The great mathematician Archimedes and the tragedian Aeschylus number among past residents, and the goddess Artemis changed a nymph into a fountain here.
- Visit the Tomb of Archimedes to see the final resting place of one of Syracuse’s hometown heroes.
- Get lost in the city’s labyrinthine streets and alleyways leading past endless shops and cafés.
Days 6–8: Catania and Departure
Sicily’s second-largest city, Catania, sits in the shadow of Mount Etna on the east coast. Spend time wandering through baroque piazzas and marveling at towering palazzi. You’ll fly back to Rome on day 7 for a final day in Italy before returning home.
- La Pescheria: Walk through this vibrant fish market to prime your appetite for a meal at one of the surrounding seafood restaurants.
- Mount Etna: One of the world’s most famous volcanoes has managed to bury Catania in lava a recorded 17 times throughout history.
