Guanaja, Honduras: Mountainous Island with Spectacular Dive Sites

When Christopher Columbus landed in Guanaja in 1502, he named it the “Island of Pines.” The easternmost of the Bay Islands, Guanaja is a land of white-sand beaches and lofty mountains covered with pine groves. It’s the least developed of its chain of islands, with a rugged interior good for hiking. Scale Grant’s Peak and you’ll be rewarded with amazing views of the Caribbean Sea, or head to the northern side of the island to hike to Guanaja’s only waterfall. The northern side is also home to the island’s most spectacular beaches, including Big Gully Beach, Hammond Beach, and Michael Rock Beach that form a continuous stretch of sugar-white sands.

There’s just a single road on Guanaja, which links the northern villages of Mangrove Bight and Savannah Bight; most places on the island are only accessible by boat. Also accessible by boat: 45 dive sites, which will take you through volcanic caverns, pinnacles, and reefs of the second-largest barrier reef in the world as well as shipwrecks and man-made Mestizo Reef. A relatively new dive site, Mestizo Reef boasts a partial shipwreck and 16th-century Spanish artifacts that include cannons and vases.
