Less than an hour’s drive from Houston, this lakefront resort invites families to spend some peaceful evenings in the Texas countryside. Cabins have open floor plans with kitchenettes and dining areas, as well as porches where you can admire the woodsy surroundings.

Willis, Texas: Natural Beauty North of Houston

Willis is a small town sandwiched between Lake Conroe and Sam Houston National Forest. It has a rural feel that gives way as you move south along I-45. The lake is great for fishing, swimming, boating, and more, while the forest features the Lone Star Hiking Trail, a 128-mile path that has gained National Recreation Trail status. The planned community of The Woodlands, about a 20-minute drive south, contains some 500 shops and boutiques as well as The Woodlands Children’s Museum. 

Houston makes for a good day trip from Willis—you can drive there in about an hour. Among the most famous attractions is Space Center Houston; Frommer’s raves, “there’s nothing like it anywhere else in the world.” Visitors can observe astronauts training for the International Space Station and try walking across a frictionless surface. Another can’t-miss site is the Houston Zoo, a 55-acre zoo that encompasses a number of ecosystems, treehouses, and aquariums.
