Hotel at a Glance: Lake Crescent Lodge

Lake Crescent Lodge dates back to 1916, when the lodge first opened as a jumping-off point to the surrounding Olympic National Park. While the lodge has been carefully preserved in its original grandeur, the scenery is as beautiful as it has always been: from the lodge, you can get sweeping views of Lake Crescent and the Olympic Mountains.

  • Groves of fir and hemlock make the lodge feel especially secluded.
  • Unplug: Guests rooms do not have a TV or telephone.
  • Relax by a stone fireplace in the lobby of the main lodge, which is furnished with antiques.
  • Get some fresh air: Hike to Marymere Falls or take a kayak tour around Lake Crescent.
  • Take a spin on Highway 101: The scenic highway, which runs all the way around the Olympic Peninsula, picks up right outside your door.

Olympic National Park: Forests, Mountains, and Colorful Tidepools

Olympic National Park can feel like three parks in one: You can find everything from snow-capped mountains to ocean tidepools to ancient forests. One of the best ways to explore the sprawling wilderness is to drive on Highway 101, which circumnavigates the Olympic Peninsula. The highway zips along forested mountain passes and the Pacific coastline, passing plenty of scenic outlooks and trailheads. It’s worth it to get out and stretch your legs maintained hiking trails such as the Peabody Creek Trail, which makes a half-mile loop from the Visitor Center’s parking lot. Most trails are open year-round, with opportunities for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter.

One of the most unique features of Olympic National Park are its tidepools filled with aquatic plants and animals, such as the giant green anemone that looks like a blooming flower. You can explore the tidepools at low tide all year long, but the best time to visit is in the summer, when rangers host informative programs.
