Lake Havasu: The Personal Watercraft Capital of the World on the Arizona-California Border
Lake Havasu has been dubbed “the personal watercraft capital of the world,” thanks in large part to Arizona’s constant sunshine and the lake’s accessibility for boaters, water-skiers, and anglers. Surrounded by rugged desert hills, this large reservoir—built behind Parker Dam on the Colorado River—provides idyllic sunset views around 400 miles of shoreline. There’s also ground-based activities such off-roading, hiking, mountain biking, and golfing at nearby courses.
One site not to be missed is Lake Havasu’s very own London Bridge, which was imported straight from England. The story goes that the London Bridge, completed in 1831 after replacing an even older version, began to sink under the pressure of 20th-century automotive transport. The city of London sought out a buyer for the bridge in 1967, and Lake Havasu City founder Robert P. McCulloch offered up the winning bid of $2.4 million. After making the long journey from England to California to Arizona via the Panama Canal, the bridge was re-dedicated in 1971 and remains one of Arizona’s top tourist destinations.
