Lodge-Style Hotel in Bustling Theater District
More than 50 singers, dancers, and musicians take the stage during the it show at Hughes Brothers Theatre, and they're all related. As one of the world’s largest family casts, the Hughes Brothers are made up of a core group of five brothers and their harmonizing wives and children. They've performed together for 28 years, 13 of which have been in Branson—a city on the Ozark Plateau known for as the “Live Music Show Capital of the World.” Next door to the Hughes Brothers Theatre, Lodge of the Ozarks not only puts its guests within walking distance of the theater, but also in close proximity to the several theaters and music halls found on Branson's famed Highway 76.
A wood-paneled lobby, backyard gazebo, and lounge area with a fireplace give the lodge a rustic ambiance. That look continues inside some of the rooms. Many come with light cedar furniture, whereas others have Victorian-style cherry-wood beds and vanities. Like tandem bikes and parachute pants, jetted tubs are perfectly sized for two people and add a touch of luxury to the double-queen jacuzzi rooms and king jacuzzi suites. All stays include a complimentary hot breakfast buffet at the onsite Rafter's Restaurant, which serves American fare à la carte for lunch and dinner.
Branson, Missouri: Family-Friendly Theaters and Concert Halls in the Ozarks
If you take a drive through the Ozarks in Missouri, it might seem like an unlikely place to find glittering lights and stage shows—for the most part, it's a rolling plateau of wooded hills, snaking rivers, and limestone bluffs. But follow Route 76 and you'll find Branson, which looks like a miniature, more-family-friendly version of Las Vegas. Dozens of stages and music halls line Branson's main strip, some of which are owned by stars such as Andy Williams and Dolly Parton. On any given night, you can watch anything from country-music performances to circus acrobatics to magic shows.
If you're traveling with kids, Silver Dollar City is a safe bet; it's located about 5 miles west of the strip. The popular theme park is built around Marvel Cave and modeled after an 18th-century frontier town. Hop on a mine-car roller coaster, take a tour by lantern through limestone caverns, or watch as blacksmiths hand-forge mailboxes for the mayor's private collection.
If you want to duck away from the lights, it's worth exploring the surrounding countryside. Two large lakes, Table Rock and Taneycomo, lie within 30 miles. Each is stocked with trout and has boats available for rent. Or head to Henning Conservation Area, where you can bike or hike along Roark Creek and through dense oak forests. The 1,534-acre reserve was donated by Paul Henning, who was inspired to create the Beverly Hillbillies after a Boy Scout trip to the Ozarks.
