World’s Biggest Food Fight in Buñol and Three Nights in Barcelona
Once a year on the last Wednesday in August, the small Valencian city of Buñol becomes enveloped in a maelstrom of tomatoes. Those flinging a juicy red fruit at one another become apart of La Tomatina Festival, the world’s largest food fight. The festival is a nearly 70-year-old tradition that takes place on an unprecedented scale—the estimated 150,000 tossed tomatoes would weigh more than 40 metric tons. Wearing old sneakers and goggles, thousands of participants literally paint Buñol’s square red during one messy, fun, and cathartic hour. When you’re not tossing fistfuls of tomatoes at strangers, you’ll be exploring Barcelona throughout a three-night stay at the Hotel Gran Ducat, which is located adjacent to the famed Plaça de Catalunya. A guided tour will take visitors to the top of Casa Mila, art nouveau architect Antoni Gaudi’s whimsical, undulating apartment building. Afterward, head to Gaudi’s Sagrada Família, a dream-like cathedral with eight towering spires, exquisitely sculpted religious façades, and an interior with columns inspired by trees and branches. Construction continues on the church, which Gaudi designed in 1884 and should be completed by 2028, but even the unfinished building has been described as “the most extraordinary personal interpretation of Gothic architecture since the Middle Ages” by National Geographic.
The trip will also visit Barcelona’s picturesque beaches along the Mediterranean. An optional bar crawl hits Barcelona’s lively nightlife scene, where you and the rest of the group can bond over tapas and cocktails. On the day of the festival, you’ll board a coach bus for a roundtrip to Buñol for the Tomatina Festival, returning after the water cannons have signaled the conclusion of the fight and the world’s largest pot of room-temperature gazpacho has been made.
