Oktoberfest Beer-Tent Festivities and Cultural Tours

In 2010, revelers at the 200th anniversary of Oktoberfest consumed more than 7 million liters of beer. To put this in perspective, imagine filling three Olympic-size swimming pools with amber ale and gulping it all down, one stein at a time. It's especially impressive considering that Oktoberfest brews must legally be 6% alcohol, higher than most German beers. During a five-day trip from Lost Travel Tours, you'll get plenty of chances to quaff ales from Munich's local breweries, thanks to beer-tent reservations that get you in ahead of the crowds. Guided cultural tours and accommodations near the bustling city center round out the trip; see the full itinerary here.

Oktoberfest dates back to 1810, when Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese invited all of Munich to celebrate their royal wedding with beer and horseracing. Today, festival-goers pay homage to the old days by wearing traditional outfits—lederhosen for the men and lace-up dirndls for the fräulein. While horseraces are mostly a thing of the past, you can still order brews at the former track known as the Hippodrom. It's one of four beer tents you'll visit during the trip, although "tent" is a bit of a misnomer—many are the size of town halls and can seat thousands. Even so, they're often packed to overflowing by midday, but you'll enjoy prime tent real estate, thanks to the tour's reservations.

Between visits to the Schottenhamel and Löwenbräu tents, stop by food stands for roasted chicken and sausages as well as salty snacks such as soft pretzels and obatzda, a spreadable spiced cheese. At the largest tent, the Hofbräu Festhalle, it's not uncommon to see partiers standing on benches to sing with the band or waltz with Dirk Nowitzki.

The Holiday Inn Munich City Centre is situated within about a 10-minute drive of the festivities and within walking distance of Marienplatz, Munich's central square lined with Gothic architecture. You can delve deeper into the city's cultural heritage during a hop-on, hop-off bus tour, which includes stops at the BMW Museum and Nymphenburg Palace, a 17th-century royal estate lined with formal English gardens.

Opening Weekend: Traditional Ceremony and Parade

Choosing the travel window of September 21–25 allows you to attend Oktoberfest's opening weekend, which is even more boisterous than the rest of the festival. Thanks to the tour's reservations at Schottenhamel’s opening ceremony—which is notoriously difficult to attend—you'll witness Munich's mayor tap the first keg and shout, "O'zapft is!" ("It's tapped!") to the accompaniment of a 12-gun salute. There's also a costume parade on Sunday, including regional outfits, flag corps, and marching bands.
