Expansive Georgian Resort with Colonial Period Décor

The stately exterior of The Founders Inn and Spa—with its orderly rows of windows and symmetrical chimneys—references Georgian architecture, named after the four Georges who ruled England in the 18th century. The resort's interior, however, pays tribute to one of the biggest thorns in the side of the third King George—colonial America. Oil paintings of the Founding Fathers peer out from gilded frames, and colonial-era furnishings cluster around roaring fireplaces. The hotel is on the grounds of and owned by Regent University, a Christian school founded in 1978 by evangelical broadcaster Pat Robertson, who remains its chancellor.

The resort’s atmosphere of traditional elegance extends to guest accommodations such as the Presidents suite, which is adorned with fine art and an antique, six-person dining table. Outside, a 250-square-foot veranda overlooks formal gardens filled with geometric hedges. Through a connecting foyer, the neighboring Governors suite offers plush parlor seating beside views of the garden and lake beyond. Alternatively, two types of Founders suites—a one-bedroom with parlor and a junior suite with fireplace—feature throwback quilts atop two- or four-poster beds.

Come dinnertime, onsite restaurants include the award-winning Swan Terrace, which sends even taste buds back in time with colonial-inspired dishes such as bacon-wrapped Virginia beef and pork belly with local peaches. The following morning, the same space holds a breakfast smorgasbord, with linen-draped tables stretching outside onto the brick-inlay terrace. Nearby, the Flowering Almond Spa’s burbling hot tub and relaxing body treatments soothe muscles sore from arm-wrestling redcoats.

Hampton Roads, Virginia: Naval Center Near Virginia Beach

The inn perches on the outskirts of Regent University, in an area noted for its proud naval history and proximity to the Atlantic. Just north of the inn, the Naval Station Norfolk covers miles upon miles of piers and aircraft hangars, forming one of the world’s largest naval complexes. Bus tours and harbor cruises led by Navy personnel narrate details of battleships, submarines, and elite squadrons of rubber duckies.

To the east, the Virginia Beach boardwalk offers a more casual perspective of the sea. The broad, 3-mile promenade meanders past public statuary, grassy park areas, and a fishing pier. Even during the quiet winter months, the boardwalk’s bike lane and walking path accommodate a steady stream of wave watchers.

About The Founders Inn and Spa

With its orderly rows of windows and symmetrical chimneys, The Founders Inn and Spa's stately exterior references Georgian architecture, a style named after the four Georges who ruled 18th-century England. The resort's interior, however, pays tribute to one of the biggest thorns in the side of the third King George—colonial America. Oil paintings of the Founding Fathers peer out from gilded frames, and colonial-era furnishings sit around roaring fireplaces. The hotel is on the grounds of and owned by Regent University, a Christian school founded in 1978 by evangelical broadcaster Pat Robertson, who remains its chancellor.

The resort continues the historical theme throughout its guest accommodations, featuring artifacts such as throwback quilts and gas fireplaces. Bacon-wrapped Virginia beef, pork belly with local peaches, and other colonial-inspired dishes send taste buds back in time at the award-winning Swan Terrace, one of two onsite restaurants.

Modern amenities such as an outdoor pool, 25-foot water slide, and tennis courts facilitate kinetic entertainment. The Flowering Almond Spa’s hot tub and relaxing body treatments soothe muscles sore from bouts in the fitness center or arm-wrestling matches with redcoats.
