The Fountaingrove area of Santa Rosa takes its name from a 19th-century utopian colony founded by Thomas Lake Harris, a self-proclaimed prophet and mystic visionary. Though utopia never arrived, the commune had an enormous influence on Sonoma history thanks to one of the group's side projects—a winery operated by Harris's second-in-command, a former samurai apprentice from Japan named Kanaye Nagasawa. Nagasawa's efforts helped transform the area into one of the world's great wine-producing regions, a scenic and history-rich setting for the Fountaingrove Inn.
Situated at the edge of a 2,000-acre, vine-covered hill, the inn's Frank Lloyd Wright–inspired exterior leads to a zen lobby, where visitors freshen up with sips of lemon- and fennel-spiced water before heading to one of 84 rooms appointed with pillow-top mattresses. A round barn that still stands on the grounds of Nagasawa's old operation is visible from the heated-outdoor-pool area, and the hotel's one-hour wine-tasting package (included with this Getaway) lets oenophiles sample pinot noir and chardonnay in the lobby.
