Revamped Golden-Era Resort Awash in Sophisticated Glamour

In the 1920s, movie stars and wealthy Angelenos began slipping away to Palm Springs, seduced by its warm, dry winters and tranquil setting. The desert community was in full bloom by 1959, when the Riviera Palm Springs Resort & Spa was built, and in its 1960s heyday, members of the Rat Pack were often seen sipping cocktails by the hotel’s pool and Elvis was know to rent out part of the resort to rehearse and catch his breath before going on tour. The Riviera of today still embodies the cool, mid-century glamour of Sinatra’s era but feels fresh and snappy thanks to a recent $70 million face-lift and seemingly constant activity, from live jazz music to late-night DJ sessions.

A collection of three-story, Old California–style bungalows are spread out over the Riviera's 24-acre campus, each housing guest rooms that overlook the San Jacinto Mountains or landscaped gardens. Designed in a spoke wheel shape, the resort grounds revolve around a hub that contains a restaurant, a large swimming pool, and the Bikini Bar—a pool deck set beneath a handwoven thatched hut, where denizens chase bites of guacamole with fancy cocktails. Day beds and cabanas outfitted with TVs and misting fans surround the pool itself, and sarong-clad servers deliver poolside drinks for daytime and evening cocktail parties.

The onsite SpaTerre, named one of the Best of the Best by Palm Springs Life in 2010, offers solar refuge in a Thai-inspired oasis. In the spa's Buddha Lounge, waterfalls, sparkling pools, and dramatic readings of lotion ingredients set the stage for relaxing treatments, which range from standard indulgences such as facials and massages to medical-grade body wraps and microdermabrasion services.

Palm Springs, California: Desert Retreat with Mid-Century Architectural Treasures

Palm Springs lies on the edge of the Coachella Valley, surrounded by mountain ranges that produce a year-round sunny climate, which sparked a mid-century influx of Hollywood elite. Some of the era’s most influential architects—including Albert Frey and Richard Neutra—were brought in to design homes for these celebrity getaways, creating a modernist architecture movement that reflected the landscape by incorporating natural resources and blending indoor and outdoor spaces. Many of these iconic buildings have been preserved and stand today as hotels, restaurants, and boutique shops, in addition to an array of private residences. Walking tours also showcase treasures from celebrity's past, including Dean Martin's old house, a cement block with George Hamilton's signature, and Mr. Snuffleupagus’s winter condo.
