Victorian B&B near University of Florida Campus
When Joe and Cindy Montalto purchased the Magnolia Plantation—a Painted Lady–style mansion built in 1885—it's no stretch to say the house was in a state of disarray. The husband-and-wife innkeepers described it on their website as "more like Animal House than a Victorian mansion." They found the property filled with mattresses, couches, and other debris left by the hundreds of hippies and college students who had inhabited the estate for the past 30 years.
The Montaltos set to work restoring the inn to its former splendor. They retained the floor plan and the house’s 10 original fireplaces. With its original red-and-green slate mansard roof still intact and its interior restored, Magnolia Plantation Bed and Breakfast Inn is a shining example of French Second Empire architecture. On the first and second floors, five unique guest rooms have been decorated in period furnishings, and each is equipped with a gas fireplace and a private bath with a claw-foot tub. Outside, guests can stroll along the brick pathways that connect property’s cottages to see the gardens or picnic by the waterfalls.
Each morning, a full complimentary breakfast spread is served in the formal dining room or in the garden gazebo. Throughout the day, guests can enjoy free snacks and beverages, and the inn's nightly social hour includes wine and hors d'oeuvres. Magnolia Plantation Bed and Breakfast Inn sits just minutes from historical downtown Gainesville and fewer than 2 miles from the University of Florida campus.
Gainesville, Florida: World-Class Museums, Historical College Buildings, and Legendary Sports Facilities
Located in northern Florida, Gainesville conveniently sits in the middle of several Florida destinations, as it’s about a two-hour drive from Orlando, St. Augustine, Tampa, and Jacksonville. Whether you see it on store windows, car bumpers, or sportswear, the Gator logo is impossible to avoid in Gainesville, home to the University of Florida. Affectionately known as "The Swamp," the Ben Hill Griffin Stadium is electric during home football games, when more than 90,000 fans painted in orange and blue perform the Gator Chomp and flawlessly recite every word of the Florida Constitution.
Two miles from the inn, the Century Tower—a 156-foot-tall Gothic carillon that serenades students with the "Florida Chimes" bell tune every quarter-hour—presides over the heart of the campus. On the campus’s western edge, the Florida Museum of Natural History tells the state's history with more than 500 fossils and Native American artifacts. While you’re there, check out the museum's Butterfly Rainforest, where hundreds of butterfly species from around the world live among lush, tropical trees, cascading waterfalls, and pedestrian walkways.

On the first and second floors, five unique guest rooms are decorated in period furnishings, and each is equipped with a gas fireplace and private bath with claw-foot tub. Outside, freestanding cottages are spread out across nearly 2 acres of land. Guests can stroll down the brick pathways that connect the cottages to see the property's tropical gardens, picnic by the waterfalls, or listen for lawnmowers harmonizing with weed wackers.
Each morning, there's a full complimentary breakfast spread served in the formal dining room or garden gazebo.
