Saugatuck, Michigan: Scenic Lakeside Town Voted “Best Summer Weekend Escape”

There are many charming beach towns along Lake Michigan’s east coast, but Saugatuck is considered one of the best. USA Today readers chose Saugatuck as the “Best Summer Weekend Escape” in 2014, and Budget Travel named Saugatuck among the “Coolest Small Towns in America” in 2010 thanks in part to its old-fashioned feel and scenic Lake Michigan coastline.

The waterfront sunsets and bright-red lighthouses have served as inspiration for painters and sculptors; the area encompassing Saugatuck and its neighboring village, Douglas, has been dubbed “The Art Coast of Michigan.” Stop inside the galleries and boutiques clustered along Water and Butler Streets in Saugatuck to find work by local and national artists, visit one of the Saugatuck wineries and sample a taste of the regional wines.

Coastal dunes tower more than 200 feet in the air at Saugatuck Dunes State Park; from the top, you can get beautiful views of the water. One of the most popular pastimes in the area is riding dune buggies—all-terrain vehicles with massive tires that whip up and down the dunes. Numerous outfits in town offer buggy tours. The park itself also features four trails that are well suited for cross-country skiing in winter, too.

About Maplewood Hotel

Cream-hued Corinthian columns and Palladian flourishes brighten the Maplewood Hotel, which was deigned to serve as a general store in the 1860s. The inn's regal 25-foot columns hint at a European vibe that suffuses the guest rooms, which underscore period furniture with soft, pastel hues. The slightly larger suite room features a jacuzzi tub, which melts the tension accumulating in lodgers or road-weary rubber duckies. In the morning, a hot breakfast awaits, and visitors can grab a baked good throughout the day.

Maplewood Hotel rests on Saugatuck's village square, which is dotted with bistros, art galleries, and antique shops stocked with steam-powered iPods. In addition to its abundance of Greek Revival and Italianate architecture, Saugatuck is especially known for being on the “Art Coast of Michigan,” and boasts fine-art galleries and the campus of the Ox-Bow School of Art.
