Rustic Hotel Just Outside Rocky Mountain National Park
In March and April, herds of elk sporting velvety new antlers can be seen roaming the mountain meadows surrounding Estes Park. If you happen to be staying at Nicky’s Resort on the shores of the Fall River, you don’t even have to leave the hotel to spot the graceful creatures as they wander down from cooler climes higher up in the Rockies. Since 1964, Nicky’s has occupied this riverside spot, veiled by a scrim of pine trees and blessed with a choice view of Castle Mountain.
Located just a mile from downtown Estes Park and 2 miles from an entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park, the resort caters both to laid-back tourists and high-energy mountain adventurers. King and two-queen lodge rooms feature pine-log furniture and rustic décor, such as plaid flannel comforters, lampshades stamped with prints of evergreen trees, and tiny ottomans made from roasted marshmallows.
Each morning, the resort serves a complimentary breakfast of muffins, coffee, and juice in the lobby. Although the swimming pool doesn’t open until June, you can still cast a line into the Fall River in hopes of snagging a rainbow trout. At the end of the day, grab a riverside table to dine alfresco at the onsite restaurant and lounge.
Estes Park, Colorado: Gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park
Some of Estes Park’s earliest visitors were gold miners hoping to strike it rich in the wake of southern Colorado’s 1850s gold rush. They were disappointed, but what the area lacks in underground riches it makes up for in scenery. In 1915, Congress designated a large swath of nearby land as the country’s 10th national park. Situated a short drive from one of the entrances to Rocky Mountain National Park, Estes Park has become a charming alpine village that’s perennially popular with tourists.
Rocky Mountain National Park is home to several impressive peaks, including a fourteener—referring to mountains that reach 14,000 feet in elevation. This all-natural skyscraper, which usually sports a picturesque cap of snow, is called Longs Peak. It’s visible from the easy, half-mile hiking trail that loops around Bear Lake. Several other trails begin at this bucolic spot. They include the Emerald Lake hike and Flattop Mountain Trail.
