Days 1–2: Flight and Nairobi, Kenya
Kenya’s biggest city is part modern metropolis and part wild: amid downtown’s skyscrapers are raucous nightclubs and inner-city wildlife centers protecting elephants and giraffes. You might also see a robed Maasai warrior or two as you stroll through town. Nairobi shares its southern border with the Nairobi Safari Park, home to lions, hyenas, and the world’s densest concentration of endangered black rhinos. Spend Day 2 relaxing and exploring this unique city at your leisure, or opt for one of the optional cultural activities.
- Optional activities: Visit the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, National Museum, or Langata Giraffe Center, or get to know Nairobi with a guided tour of downtown (additional fees apply).
- Accommodations: Test your luck at the hotel’s casino and grab a drink at Hemingway’s Lounge. After watching the Safari Cats Dancers & Acrobats perform, get some rest in your spacious room, which is outfitted with antique African furniture, canopy beds, and a balcony.
Days 3–4: Samburu National Game Reserve
At this game reserve, you’ll see some of Africa’s most revered animals, including giraffes, Grevy zebras, and the horned beisa oryx. On Day 4, you’ll explore the protected park’s savannahs and acacia woodlands on morning, midday, and evening game drives to catch a glimpse of these species and others.
- Be on the lookout for elephants, lions, and leopards.
- Optional excursion: Instead of the midday game drive, you can visit the Samburu cultural village to meet the tribe’s seminomadic cattle farmers (additional fees apply).
- Accommodations: At Ashnil Samburu Tented Camp, you’ll stay in a spacious, furnished luxury tent. Before bed, relax at the buffet restaurant and lounge or take a dip in the pool beneath the clear night sky.
Day 5: Ol Pejeta Conservancy
The Ol Pejeta Conservancy has the highest wildlife-to-area ratio of any Kenyan park, and is home to all of the Big Five game animals. Try to spot all five during your evening game drive.
- Meet a chimpanzee at the Jane Goodall Institute chimpanzee sanctuary.
- Accommodations: Watch animals at night at the floodlit watering hole near Sweetwaters Serena Tented Camp. You can see it from your luxury tent’s private veranda and the onsite Waterhole Bar.
Day 6: Lake Nakuru National Park
Your next stop is tucked in the Great Rift Valley. An evening game drive might yield sightings of pink flamingo flocks and Marabou stork taking flight. Beneath them, you may see some white rhinos and rare Rothschild giraffes.
- Did you know? There are fewer than 670 Rothschild giraffes in the wild.
- Also look for lions, leopards, gazelles, and hyrax, a small, furry animal thought to be elephants’ closest living relatives.
- Accommodations: Watch landing flamingos turn the nearby Lake Nakuru’s banks pink from your room at Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge. Dine al fresco while enjoying views of the park and pool at the onsite restaurant.
Days 7–9: Maasai Mara National Reserve
Enjoy mountainous views while passing through Great Rift Valley to your final destination, the Maasai Mara National Reserve. Here, you have another chance to see the Big Five roaming the Serengeti plains.
- Game drives: Enjoy an evening game drive on Day 7, a full-day game drive on Day 8, and a morning game drive on Day 9.
- Optional excursion: Visit a Maasai village to see how the locals live, learn about their social structure, and maybe witness ritual singing and dancing.
- Accommodations Enjoy the warm weather and international and traditional African cuisines at the open-air restaurant at Ashnil Mara Tented Camp. Wake up early in your breezy, structured tent to see a beautiful sunrise over the plains.
Day 10: Return Flight
You’ll spend Day 10 resting on the plane en route to the United States.
