Days 1–2: Flight and Arusha
Following an overnight flight, you’ll spend 1 day in Arusha, a northern Tanzanian city located close to some of Africa’s most famous landscapes—Mount Kilimanjaro is only about 70 miles to the east.
Day 3: Tarangire National Park
Next up is Tarangire National Park, home to more than 500 bird species and large herds of elephants and giraffes. Though smaller than the Serengeti, the park has a denser concentration of wildlife, so visitors have a higher chance of seeing animals in action.
- Hard to spot: Gerenuk, lesser kudu, greater kudu, oryx, and even eland may be more easily found here than in other parks thanks to its size and altitude.
- Elephants on parade: Herds in the park can be as many as 300 elephants strong, making for an impressive photo op.
Day 4: Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area
Often called the Eighth Wonder of the World, Ngorongoro Conservation Area encompasses a soaring plateau of volcanic highlands and craters. It was originally designed to accommodate indigenous Masai communities and visitors, so you’ll likely see villagers grazing their cattle and donkeys. In the evening, gather around the fire at Olduvai Camp with Masai staff.
- The Big Five: View buffalo, elephants, leopards, lions, and rhinos on a full-day game drive with a picnic lunch.
- Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest unbroken volcanic caldera. It’s densely packed with some 250,000 wild animals, including the prehistoric black rhinoceros.
Days 5–6: Serengeti National Park
Frequently hailed as Africa’s greatest game park, the massive Serengeti National Park has nearly 5,800 square miles of untapped wilderness. Only the occasional rocky outcropping or solitary tree breaks up the vast expanses of short-grass plains, giving the impression of a wide golden sea. Keep an eye out for predators including jackals, leopards, and some 2,000 lions that have gotten used to human presence. At night, retire to gorgeous, airy tents at an eco-friendly camp.
- Admire the kopje rock formations, which provide stark contrast to the grassy plains and give lions and cheetahs places to hide their cubs.
- Look for hyenas—they’re everywhere, waiting to pick off the wildebeest that fall behind in a migrating herd.
Days 7–8: Arusha and Departure
You’ll return to Olduvai Camp for dinner on day 6 and reach Arusha (where your adventure began) on day 7. Spend the afternoon shopping for souvenirs in the local markets before boarding your return flight that evening. You’ll arrive back in the United States on day 8.
