Ontario's Haliburton Highlands: All-Seasons Resort Destination with a Thriving Arts Scene
Sparkling lakes, scenic trails, and charming villages dot an area of central Ontario known as the Haliburton Highlands. A year-round resort destination, the highlands are best known for having an abundance of all-season outdoor recreation. Spring and summer are especially nice times to visit, when pristine waterways fill with canoes, kayaks, and sailboats and wilderness trails open to hikers, bikers, and ATVs. The Haliburton County Rail Trail is a popular route—it crisscrosses more than 20 miles (34 km) of rural countryside, with a number of access points for shorter treks. Just north of here, Algonquin Provincial Park is well worth a visit. Accessible only by foot or canoe, it's home to large populations of moose and thousands of acres of maple forests.
The Haliburton Highlands also harbor a thriving arts scene. Almost every community boasts art studios and galleries that regularly host events for the general public. The Haliburton Sculpture Forest features outdoor sculptures by Canadian and international artists connected by a series of walking paths.
Near the southern edge of the highlands, the town of Minden lies along the banks of Gull River. A boardwalk downtown stretches for nearly a mile along the riverfront. Follow it all the way to the end and you'll reach the Minden Hills Cultural Centre, which encompasses an art gallery, museum and pioneer village, and public library.
