Cayucos, California: Sea Glass and Wineries

Cayucos hugs the sandy shoreline of Estero Bay in central California, about halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles. One of the best ways to get to know the town is on a peaceful stroll along the beach; during low tide, you can walk for miles on the golden sands. Keep an eye out for sea glass that washes up on shore. The town celebrates the colorful baubles each year during the annual Cayucos Sea Glass Festival, held in March.

Paso Robles wine country is just a half-hour east of here. More than 200 wineries and 26,000 acres of vineyards dot the rolling countryside. Enjoy a glass of the region’s bordeaux, rhône, and zinfandel blends at tasting rooms, restaurants, and wine bars scattered throughout the area. For another worthwhile excursion, head a half-hour north to Hearst Castle in San Simeon. Built by newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst in 1947, the mansion features 165 rooms on oceanfront grounds dotted with tennis courts, gardens, and pools.
