Pawhuska, Oklahoma: Nature and History in the Capital of the Osage Nation
As the capital of the Osage Nation, Pawhuska is also a capital of Oklahoma’s Native American heritage. That history is on full display at the Osage Tribal Museum, where exhibits detail the tribe’s rich history. Even the building is local: its outer structure was built in 1872 from sturdy limestone excavated from nearby mines. The Osage Nation also operates the Osage Casino Pawhuska, where guests can try their hands at live blackjack, Texas hold’em, and other table games.
The name Pawhuska might be familiar to theatergoers: Tracy Letts’s Pulitzer Prize–winning play August: Osage County was set in a troubled rural estate just outside of town, and portions of the 2013 film adaptation were shot there. Also just outside of town is Osage Hills State Park, where fishing, hiking, and camping opportunities abound throughout the year.
