Days 1 and 2: Arrival and Tahiti

With its soft beaches, turquoise lagoons, and volcanic peaks, Tahiti is a textbook picture of paradise. Thanks to the island’s compact size, you’re never more than an hour or so from Papeete, French Polynesia’s capital. Visit an open-air market to shop for souvenirs such as brightly colored sarongs, or head to the Territorial Assembly building, which was once frequented by French artist Paul Gauguin and, before that, served as the royal palace of Queen Pomare IV.

  • Vai’ete Square: Sample local and international eats from more than two dozen vendors who set up mobile restaurants each night in this waterfront park.
  • Island hopping: Take a 30-minute ferry ride to laid-back Moorea, where you can hike in forested mountains or snorkel in crystal-clear waters.
  • Water Gardens of Vaipahi: About an hour from bustling Papeete, you’ll find waterfalls and abundant tropical flowers and plants in this serene spot.

Days 3–5: Auckland, New Zealand

Auckland has more boats per capita than any other place in the world, hence its nickname: “City of Sails.” If you can tear yourself from the beautiful beaches lining the Hauraki Gulf, take a ferry to Rangitoto and Motutapu Islands. Here, you can hike to a volcano summit and tour underground lava tunnels and WWII bunkers. Cap off your day in Auckland’s waterfront Parnell district, where you can browse boutiques set into converted Victorian homes.

  • Sky Tower: Get 360-degree views of the waterfront and the city skyline from more than 700 feet up.
  • Queen Street: Shop for designer fashions and catch live theater in Auckland’s busiest district.
  • Animal encounters: Swim with sharks or meet penguins at Kelly Tarlton’s Sea Life Aquarium.

Days 6–10: Sydney, Australia, and Departure

With sunny weather essentially year-round, Sydney is a city best experienced outside: you can sail across Sydney Harbour, explore the Royal Botanic Gardens, or take a surfing lesson on the famed waves of Bondi Beach. If you like to shop, look no further than Paddington Markets, an open-air bazaar where more than 150 vendors sell art, clothing, and crafts every Saturday.

  • Bondi to Coogee Beach Walk: Stroll along the coast east of Sydney on a 4-mile route lined with beaches and cliff-side parks.
  • The Rocks: Past and present meet in this historic district. European settlers first arrived here in 1788; now it’s packed with eclectic shops and restaurants.
  • Art Gallery of New South Wales: Marvel at works by Australian and international artists including Arthur Boyd and Pablo Picasso.
