Explore Modern and Ancient Cambodia

This Cambodian vacation offers a unique glimpse into both modern Cambodian life and its ancient beginnings. First, you’ll see the rapidly developing Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capital, before heading to Siem Reap, which has some centuries-old ruins. Between the half-day guided city tours, you’ll have plenty of time to explore both destinations on your own. This vacation includes:

  • Round-trip airfare from Los Angeles (LAX), New York (JFK), Newark (EWR), or Chicago (ORD)
  • Round-trip airport-hotel transfers in both Phnom Penh and Siem Reap
  • 4 nights of accommodations in Phnom Penh in a deluxe room at Ohana Hotel or similar
  • 4 nights of accommodations in Siem Reap in a terrace room at Casa Angkor Hotel or similar
  • Breakfast
  • Half-day city tour in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap
  • Regional English-speaking guide
  • All taxes and service charges

Day 1: Fly to Cambodia

Days 2–5: Phnom Penh

Ancient spires and luxury hotels butt up against each other in Cambodia’s exotic capital city. You’ll get to know it during a half-day tour, during which you’ll visit iconic sites like Wat Phnom, the city’s oldest shrine, and the Royal Palace’s Silver Pagoda. The pagoda is home to several buddha statues: the baccarat crystal Emerald Buddha, and a life-size, solid gold likeness encrusted in some 2,000 diamonds. The next two days are yours to explore the city at your leisure.

  • National Museum: This museum houses one of the world’s best collections of Khmer sculpture, with a collection that spans a whole millennium.
  • Tuol Sleng Museum: Housed in a former high school-turned-prison, this museum presents a sobering look at atrocities of the Khmer Rouge, the communist regime that rose to power in the 1970s.
  • Grab a drink at the riverfront pubs and cafes or the clubs lining Street 51.
  • Go shopping: You can munch on fried grasshoppers, a local delicacy, at Central Market; if that isn’t appetizing, there’s also a wide array of headscarves and gemstones. Streets 240 and 178, meanwhile, offer boutiques and art galleries.
  • Eat like a local: The city’s home to plenty of upscale restaurants, but the food stalls are where Cambodian cuisine really shines. Enjoy coconut fish curry (amok) served in a banana leaf or rice porridge (bobor) at one of Phnom Penh’s many roadside shacks.

Days 6–9: Siem Reap and Angkor Wat

On day six, you’ll fly to Siem Reap and transfer to your hotel. The next day’s city tour takes you to the Angkor Archeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site containing what’s left of several Khmer Empire capital cities. Here, you’ll see some of the biggest religious structures ever built, as well as the towering, moss-covered ruins of ancient passageways, moats, temples, and palaces. Meanwhile, the nearby city of Siem Reap is more modern; you’ll have plenty of time to explore its galleries, spas, and shops.

  • Watch the sunrise at Phnom Bakheng, a 9th-century, five-tier temple in Angkor Archeological Park.
  • Pamper yourself with a hot-stone massage or aromatherapy flower bath at Frangipani Spa.
  • Cheap eats There are plenty of laid-back, affordable restaurants in Siem Reap, most of which surround the Old Market. You can also enjoy fried rice or noodles at the small, thatched-roof restaurants near the temples.
  • Optional trip extension: You can opt for a four-night extension to Vietnam ($599 per person; $999 for single occupancy). This includes one night at Chau Pho Hotel in Chau Doc and three nights at Kingston Hotel in Ho Chi Minh City. On this optional leg, you’ll enjoy a speedboat ride to Chau Doc and a half-day Ho Chi Minh City tour.

Day 10: Return flight to U.S.
