Ideas for Your Vacation
Singapore offers traditional and futuristic elements, but with the added twist of elegant colonial architecture. Start your day with tai chi in the Botanic Gardens. There you can explore the National Orchid Garden, the largest showcase of tropical orchids in the world, as well as untamed rainforests. There are also many attractions at the mouth of the Singapore River; here you’ll find the Esplanade theater’s spiked domes and the neo-Palladian Asian Civilisations Museum, whose collections include Islamic calligraphy and Vietnamese sculptures. Next, guests will visit Cebu, a prominent province in the Philippines made up of over 150 small islands. The land boasts memories of a historic past, including 16th-century Spanish colonial landmarks and 18th-century Spanish forts.
- Go shopping on Orchard Road, which is lined with malls. Just steps away are Chinatown’s Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum, where you’ll see Tang dynasty architecture, ornate paintings, and sculptures.
- Merlion: Singapore’s legendary 6-foot fountain bears the body of a scaled fish and the head of a lion that spouts streams of water.
- Gardens by the Bay: Climb inside an indoor waterfall that pours over tropical foliage and wander through a flower dome filled with rare orchids.
- Go snorkeling at Nalusuan Island Marine Sanctuary to swim around coral and colorful fish.
- Must-see attraction: Check out the ceiling frescoes and golden altar at Basilica Minore del Santo Niño de Cebu, which dates to the 16th century.
- Worth the climb: Head to the observation deck at Chocolate Hills for views of more than 1,000 grassy mounds in the distance.
