Day 1: Quito

After arriving in Quito and getting transferred to your hotel, you’ll have the rest of the day to explore the capital city on your own. Check out the Presidential Palace or wander through the historic district, which is chock-full of beautiful 16th-century colonial architecture.

  • Straddle the equator near the Middle of the World Monument—it was built about 240 meters from the globe’s horizontal dividing line.
  • Pululahua Volcano is one of the earth’s only known inhabited calderas; it blooms with orchids and tropical plants, watered by a dark fog that shrouds the peak daily.

Days 2–4: Galápagos

You’ll awake refreshed on Day 2 and ready for your morning transfer to the airport for your local flight to the Galapagos Islands. As you fly over the collection of 19 islands, you’ll take in the beauty of the archipelago just as Charles Darwin did on his famed 19th-century voyage aboard the Beagle. A guide will meet you in San Cristobal and you’ll begin your adventure.

  • See the stars of the show at Galapagos National Park ($100 park fee not included). It’s home to giant tortoises, each of which can weigh over 500 pounds.
  • Watch the sunset on Playa Mann, a beach frequented by sea lions.
  • Do some snorkeling in Frigate Bay, making sure to keep an eye out for sea turtles.
  • Hike across lava fields while looking for frigatebirds, which can often be spotted nosediving into the deep blue waters.

Days 5–7: Guayaquil

Before flying back home on Day 7, you’ll get a full day to explore the seaside town of Guayaquil. The city tour begins with a walk through the Las Peñas neighborhood and includes a stop by La Rotonda, a monument to Simón Bolívar.

  • Malécon 2000: This riverfront boardwalk takes visitors past numerous monuments, shops, and restaurants along the Guayas River.
  • Make friends with iguanas at Seminario Park, where dozens of wild iguanas make their home.
  • Stock up on souvenirs at the Mercado Artesanal, where you can find plenty of Ecuadorian handicrafts.
