Lima

Lima is Peru’s official capital and its cultural capital, as it has been since the 16th century. You can find remnants of the colonial era throughout the city, and one of the most striking is the church of St. Francis. Its striking yellow façade and baroque accents belie its secret network of underground tunnels inside, where thousands of human bones have been arranged to form elaborate geometric patterns. Dive even deeper into the town’s traditions by shopping for alpaca-wool socks and leather products at its open-air markets, dining on ceviche at an outdoor restaurant, or seeing ancient ceramics and tools at its archaeological museums.

  • Sightseeing highlights: the 17th-century San Francisco Monastery has a network of underground tunnels riddled with thousands of human bones, which have been arranged to form elaborate patterns. The historic city center has many well-preserved examples of colonial architecture, too.
  • Must-visit museum: The Museo Larco houses one of the continent’s premiere collections of Pre-Columbian art, as well as the textiles, jewelry, and crafts of ancient Peruvian cultures.
  • Colorful light show: El Circuito Magico del Agua wows visitors with a whimsical water-and-light show that’s choreographed to music. Time magazine says “locals and tourists agree it’s surprisingly awesome.”

Buenos Aires

The coastal city of Buenos Aires is Argentina’s capital and cultural epicenter. By day, outdoor markets buzz with locals selling leather wares, incense, and Argentine garb. By night, sultry music emanates from tango clubs (known locally as milongas).

  • Half-day city tour: This deal comes with a half-day tour of Buenos Aires, which visits the historic Plaza de Mayo and the brightly painted buildings of La Boca, an Italian-inspired neighborhood.
  • Cementerio de la Recoleta: Massive mausoleums and intricate grave sites (including Eva Perón’s) speckle the grounds of what CNN calls one of the 10 most beautiful cemeteries in the world.
  • Teatro Colón: Considered one of the world’s finest theaters, this renovated, century-old theater hosts ballets, operas, and concerts. Drop in to observe its warm acoustics and intricate decor.

Bogotá

The majestic peaks of the Andes mountains loom over the skyline of Colombia’s capital. Though there are plenty of skyscrapers, the city center, known as La Candelaria, is marked by cobblestone streets and centuries-old churches.

  • La Catedral Primada: Located at the eastern end of Bolívar Square, this Roman Catholic cathedral is the largest in Colombia and among the most beautiful in South America.
  • Must-eat restaurant: Eccentrically decorated, the sprawling Andrés Carne del Res boasts 11 dining rooms, two dance floors, a climbing wall, and a steak that some consider to be the city’s best.
  • Museo Botero: Fernando Botero, Colombia’s most-famous modern artist, donated much of the collection at his namesake museum, which also includes works by Dalí, Picasso, and Monet.
