Tahiti
Soft beaches, turquoise lagoons, volcanic peaks—Tahiti has remained the picture of paradise since European explorers first landed on its white and pink shores. The InterContinental Resort & Spa, located in the small town of Tata’a, will be your home base for the first few days. It’s just a few miles outside of Pape’te, French Polynesia’s laid-back capital. Here, you’ll find Marche de Pape’ete, an open-air market where you can pick up local gifts such as brightly colored sarongs. Or head to the Territorial Assembly building, which was once frequented by French post-impressionist artist Paul Gauguin and, before that, was the royal palace of Queen Pomare IV.
- Where you’ll stay: The resort’s two infinity pools and beach are surrounded by a massive garden and offer views of nearby Mo’orea island. Spend a relaxing day at the spa, or enjoy the perpetually warm weather at the beach, in the open-air restaurant, or on your room’s private terrace or balcony.
- Plage Lafayette: This beach is unique for its sparkling black sand; it’s protected on the eastern side by steep cliffs.
- Grab dinner or a snack at les roulottes, or food carts, which offer convenient and affordable eats all over the city.
- Cathédrale Notre-Dame: On a tour of this historical cathedral, you can see Gothic vaulted ceilings and detailed sculptures up close. It’s the oldest Catholic church in Tahiti and one of the few remaining examples of the island’s early colonial architecture.
- Enjoy the view: You can see green hills, jagged volcanoes, and turquoise waters while strolling the Waterfront Esplanade. One of its highlights is Vai’ete Square (located a mere block from your hotel), where local performers and food vendors hold court every night.
Mo’orea
Just a short ferry ride away, you’ll discover Mo’orea’s quiet white beaches, vertical green cliffs, and shallow lagoon. The marine life is the real draw here—Mo’orea is part of the world’s largest coral reef ecosystem, making it a popular spot for snorkeling and scuba diving. Hit the waves at the Lagoonarium to see sharks, stingrays, and colorful fish up close, or keep your hair dry with a glass-bottomed boat tour. You can take via the circle island road to many of the most popular attractions, including Atiraa Waterfall, Toatea Overlook, the undeveloped Opunohu Bay, and Mount Mauaroa, famous for its shark-tooth-like shape.
- Where you’ll stay: Tucked between mountains, a lush garden, and a tropical lagoon, the secluded InterContinental Resort & Spa features an infinity pool with a swim-up bar. Rooms are beautifully decorated with Polynesian-inspired decor.
- Tiki Village Cultural Center: see a traditional Polynesian show, go shopping, and sample local cuisine. You can also learn how locals make garments, braid baskets, and play local instruments.
- Play outside: Kitesurfing, kayaking, and whale- and dolphin-watching tours are all popular here. Further inland, you can hike up rainforest-covered mountainsides.
- Sample local harvests: The island’s many plantations grow cotton, sugarcane, coffee, and pineapple. You can sample and purchase many such items at village stores and roadside stands. Head to the Fruit Juice Factory to taste juices and liquors made from local fruits.
