Alajuela, Costa Rica: City Center near Volcano and Nature Park
Though it’s second-largest city in Costa Rica, Alajuela is best known for its surrounding wilderness. Set in central Costa Rica, Alajuela is just a quick trip to La Paz Waterfall Gardens Nature Park and Poas Volcano National Park. Poas features a 1,000 foot-deep crater, geothermal fumeroles that spout spouting with geothermal pressure, and the colorful quetzal birds, which were held sacred by the ancient Mayans.
Elaborate Baroque accents and a striking red dome characterize the Church of the Agony, which was built in the 1940s. It’s one of the key landmarks of Alajuela’s city center. Also worth a visit: the Juan Santamaria Museum, which has artifacts dedicated to the memory of Juan Santamaria, a beloved Costa Rican war hero. The museum occupies a building that was formerly the city’s army garrison and jail.
