Camden, Maine: 19th-Century Charm on Sparkling Penobscot Bay
Ever since the first six-masted schooner was built here, in 1900, Camden has been known as a center for boating. From the many hills that look out to Penobscot Bay, you can see windjammers and kayaks cruising about the harbor, and the spires of century-old churches looming over downtown. Historical buildings abound here: You can dine at European-style bistros and pick up souvenirs in boutiques set in brownstone buildings that date back to the 19th century. Along the waterfront, colorful wooden buildings house restaurants and lobster joints that serve fresh-caught Maine lobster and rock crab.
The inland is just as beautiful as the coast. Trees on Camden’s hills bloom bright green in warm months and blaze red and gold during the fall. A few miles west of the water, you can hike the rolling trails of Camden Hills State Park to the top of Mount Battie for views that extend all the way to Penobscot Bay.
