Present Moment Retreat has the surroundings of a relaxing, sunny vacation destination—it’s located along western Mexico’s Troncones Beach. But the retreat aims for more than just being a relaxing place to visit; it’s also a spiritual-wellness center, and it coordinates meditation and yoga classes along with healthy meals, therapeutic massages, and nightly dancing and drum circles.
Set on stilts above the private beach, the open-air yoga pavilion is the center of the resort. Here, you can take a variety of classes designed to connect the mind and body. Learn to control breathing during Pranayama classes, or reconnect with the universe with yoga-teacher training. A daily schedule may look something like this:
8 a.m.–9 a.m.: Mindful Guided Meditation
9 a.m.–11 a.m.: Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga
1 p.m.–2 p.m.: Qigong (Chinese Yoga) or Tai Chi
4 p.m.–5:30 p.m.: Restorative Yoga
Named after virtues such as serenity, harmony, and intuition, each of the resort’s bungalows has been crafted using reclaimed local wood and features an open-air design that eliminates the need for air conditioning and lets you catch errant frisbees. The resort uses its own water-filtration system, meaning no gas is spent shipping water in, and biodegradable and nontoxic soaps are used throughout the property.
At the onsite restaurant, meals are artfully crafted using all-natural, local ingredients. Past favorites have included plantain-crusted mahi-mahi in a tropical salsa and apple crisp made with goat-milk caramel, housemade granola, and nutmeg whipped cream.
Troncones Beach, Mexico: Secluded Paradise North of the Mexican Riviera
Located between the Sierra Madre and the Mexican Riviera, Troncones has a population of fewer than 1,000 and enjoys a secluded atmosphere away from touristy developers. Present Moment Retreat has affiliations with a number of local guides who can lead eco-tours of the area. Feel free to sail in a kayak down nearby estuaries or hike the nearby Sierra Madres. Troncones is also one of Mexico’s most popular surf destinations, attracting wave catchers of all skill levels.
