Contemporary Hotel Within Walking Distance of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum
Centrally located in downtown Springfield, the President Abraham Lincoln Hotel & Conference Center offers easy access to the President’s old stomping grounds. From here, you can walk to the Old State Capitol, one of Lincoln’s frequent haunts as a lawyer and politician. Just a few blocks south is the home where Lincoln lived from 1844 until 1861, when he moved into the White House. At the nearby Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, visitors learn about Honest Abe’s life and presidency through interactive exhibits, historical photographs, and original manuscripts that include a signed copy of the Emancipation Proclamation. The hotel also celebrates the life of Illinois’s most famous resident through framed portraits that can be found throughout the property’s guest rooms and common areas.
Standard rooms combine contemporary decor with antique touches, as each room contains a quill and ink-pot set and a replica of Lincoln’s legendary stovepipe hat. A bright red wall and boldly patterned curtains underscore the rooms’ elegant burnished-mahogany furniture and brushed-silver lamps. Downstairs, grab a bite to eat at Lindsay’s Restaurant, which serves casual American cuisine for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Springfield, IL: Home of President Abraham Lincoln
In 1837, Springfield became Illinois’s third and final state capital, thanks largely to the political sway of a young man who would become the city’s most illustrious citizen—Abraham Lincoln. It was here that he honed his legal prowess in the mid-1800s, practicing law in the Lincoln-Herndon Law Offices and the Old State Capitol. Today, visitors can tour both of these handicap-accessible, Greek Revival–style buildings.
No trip to Springfield is complete without a visit to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. The library houses thousands of historic photographs, manuscripts, and newspapers dating back to 1814. The interactive museum campus is entertaining for both die-hard historians and casual fans of Lincoln’s little-known electronica albums. Here, you’ll see a replica of Lincoln’s boyhood cabin and a children’s area where youngsters can try on period clothing and take pictures with life-size cutouts of young Abraham.
Finally, pay your respects to the 16th president at Lincoln Tomb in Oak Ridge Cemetery, the final resting place of Lincoln, his wife, and three of their four sons. In front of the tomb, you’ll see a replica of the Lincoln bust by Gutzon Borglum, the sculptor best known for creating Mount Rushmore.
