Days 1–5: Flight and Melbourne
Melbourne, which sits along Port Phillip on the southern tip of the continent, has recently emerged as a top destination Down Under, thanks to the city’s high-end shopping, world-famous street art, and burgeoning foodie scene. After an overnight flight that crosses the International Date Line, you’ll arrive in the city on day 3.
- Guided sightseeing tour: This included excursion takes you to the Royal Botanic Gardens, a Formula 1 Grand Prix racetrack, and the Shrine of Remembrance honoring Australians who served in World War I (included).
- Take a day trip to Phillip Island, where droves of penguins waddle ashore at sunset.
- National Gallery of Victoria: The nearly 70,000 artworks housed here include Egyptian antiquities and paintings by Claude Monet.
Days 6–8: Cairns
Set on the Coral Sea on Australia’s northeast coast, Cairns is known as the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest reef system. This underwater paradise supports a mind-blowing assortment of tropical fish, sharks, and colorful coral formations, making scuba diving here a must.
- Included adventure: Travel into the Australian rainforest via the Kuranda Scenic Railway and see native animals such as koalas and kangaroos in Rainforestation Nature Park. Afterward, you’ll soar above the trees on the Skyrail Cableway.
- Cairns Botanic Gardens: Colorful butterflies and birds flit amid more than 4,000 types of tropical plants.
- Dig your toes into the sand at Trinity Beach, a palm-studded paradise located about 12 miles north of the city.
Days 9–12: Sydney and Departure
Given its year-round sunny weather, Sydney is a city best experienced outside. You can sail across Sydney Harbour, explore the Royal Botanic Gardens, or take a surfing lesson on the famed waves of Bondi Beach. If you like to shop, look no further than Paddington Markets, an open-air bazaar where more than 150 vendors sell art, clothing, and crafts every Saturday.
- Sightseeing cruise: Marvel at the city’s world-famous skyline as you glide along Sydney Harbour (included).
- Sydney Opera House: Tour the iconic building or see a performance.
- The Rocks district is the oldest part of the city. Walk streets lined with historical buildings, then have a drink at one of the many pubs.
