What was once the site of a 19th-century Shaker village is now Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill, a fully restored, landmark destination in Kentucky’s Bluegrass region. As a guest, you’ll sleep in one of 13 unique preserved buildings in the village and be able to stroll the grounds, dine right on the property, and participate in village activities and tours.

Harrodsburg, Kentucky: Oldest City in Kentucky Close to Lexington
First settled in 1774, Harrodsburg is believed to be the oldest city in Kentucky. Its historic downtown buildings contain restaurants, shops, and markets, but they aren’t consciously cute—Harrodsburg’s downtown is a utility, a place where people drive in from the country to run errands. It’s very close to Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill, a preserved Shaker village that’s a major tourist draw, and just a few miles from Herrington Lake, an enormous, twisting artificial lake that was formed by Dix Dam. Herrington Lake is a hotspot for boating and fishing; you can angle for bluegill, largemouth bass, crappie, and striped bass on its peaceful, deep waters.
Harrodsburg is just a half-hour drive from Lexington, where you can visit Keeneland and the Kentucky Horse Park to experience the city’s famous equestrian scene. If horses aren’t your thing, you can visit and tour the former home of Mary Todd Lincoln and other historic sites.
