With this Getaway, you can spend 3, 5, or 6 nights at Sleeping Giant Rainforest Lodge, a jungle resort in the rainforest of central Belize. Or, with the Jungle & Beach options, you can choose to split 6 nights between Sleeping Giant Rainforest Lodge and its sister resort along the Caribbean Sea, Almond Beach Resort. With the Jungle & Beach options, you’ll spend your first 3 nights in an ocean-view room at Almond Beach and then transfer (transfers included) to Sleeping Giant for 3 nights in a garden-view room.
Sleeping Giant Rainforest Lodge
A TripAdvisor 2014 award winner for “top 10 small hotel in Belize” and “top 10 hotel for romance—Belize,” Sleeping Giant Rainforest Lodge is enveloped by more than 100,000 acres of lush Belizean jungle in the Sibun National Forest Reserve. The lodge is in a prime spot to admire the scenery—you can do so from its open-air porches or on a hiking trail leading to scenic vistas overlooking the Sibun River valley gorge. And since Sleeping Giant has only 13 guest rooms, you’ll enjoy a tranquil and relaxing stay.
Many of the materials used to build the lodge were taken directly from the property, including mahogany timber, local grasses used to weave furniture, and air-conditioning units plucked right from the trees. You’ll also dine locally, since the open-air restaurant serves housemade Belizean dishes.
A short walk away, the Sibun River is an excellent spot for a swim, or to float in an inflatable kayak or inner tube borrowed from the lodge. You can also explore the surrounding jungle on guided tours, which include early-morning bird watching and an evening hike through the jungle.
Sibun National Forest Reserve, Belize: Dense Jungle Near Belmopan
A protected area of dense pine forest and jungle, Sibun National Forest Reserve stretches throughout the central Belize district of Cayo. The reserve’s rolling hillsides harbor a variety of wildlife, including howler and spider monkeys that make their homes in the jungle canopies. Bird watching is a big draw, too—if you keep an eye out, you might spot tiger herons, acorn woodpeckers, and black-collared hawks.
The Belizean capital of Belmopan is just a few miles north of the reserve. It was named the capital in 1971, after a hurricane destroyed the old capital in Belize City. A smaller city, Belmopan is easily explored on foot; be sure to check out the National Assembly, which was built to resemble a Mayan temple.
